Checking a Car Battery Before It Strands You
A battery can read 12.6 volts and still fail to crank. Why voltage is not health, what a tester measures that a multimeter cannot, and when to test not guess.

The most expensive battery mistake is nursing one through a winter it was never going to survive. A battery does not usually die without warning — it warns you by cranking a little slower, testing a little weaker, dropping under load in a way a resting voltage reading never shows. Catching that early is the difference between replacing it on your schedule and being stranded on the coldest morning.
The catch is that the obvious check — voltage — cannot see it coming.

Voltage is charge, not health
This is the distinction the whole page rests on.
A multimeter across the terminals reads state of charge: about 12.6 to 12.7 volts is a full battery, and that is genuinely useful — the readings and the method are in a multimeter for car owners. But a full battery is not necessarily a healthy one. A battery with a failing cell can sit at a perfectly respectable 12.6V and then collapse the instant the starter draws real current, because capacity — how much it can actually deliver — is a different property from how full it is.
Those two come apart precisely when it matters. The battery that reads fine in the driveway and cranks slowly on a cold morning is one whose voltage is fine and whose capacity is gone.
What a tester actually does
A battery tester answers the question voltage cannot: will this battery still start the car?

The two kinds of tester get at capacity differently. A load tester applies a real starter-like draw and watches whether the voltage holds up — the truest test, but it gets hot and needs a well-charged battery to mean anything. An electronic conductance tester measures the battery's internal resistance and calculates its cranking amps and a health percentage in seconds, works on a partially charged battery, and does not heat up. For most owners the conductance tester is the more practical tool.
What to check before buying a tester
An AGM or EFB mode, explicitly stated. This is the one that catches people out. Any car with stop-start almost certainly has an AGM or EFB battery rather than a conventional flooded one, and they behave differently under a conductance test. A tester with no chemistry setting is assuming flooded and will report a modern battery inaccurately — which is the opposite of what you bought it for.
Whether it needs the CCA figure typed in. Older conductance testers require you to enter the battery's cold-cranking-amp rating before they can judge the result, which is fine until the label has faded or been covered by a previous owner's sticker — at which point the tool cannot test the battery in front of it. Newer designs work without it. Worth knowing which you are buying.
A CCA range that covers your battery, and ideally well beyond it if you might test more than one car. Check the number on your battery label against the tester's stated range rather than assuming.
Multi-standard input, if the car is not American. Batteries are rated in CCA, EN, DIN, SAE, IEC or JIS depending on origin, and entering an EN figure into a tester expecting CCA gives an answer that looks plausible and is wrong.
Temperature compensation matters if you test in the cold, which is exactly when you will want to. Readings below roughly 10°C drift without it.

When to test
Before winter, and at the first slow crank. Cold roughly halves what a tired battery can deliver while raising what the engine demands, so a battery that is marginal in autumn is the one that fails on the first frost. Testing in October is how "it died on the coldest morning" becomes "I replaced it when it suited me" — the entire reason to test before it dies rather than after.

Check the connection before condemning the battery
A weak test result is not always a weak battery.
Where this fits
It is the health check at the centre of the battery cluster. A Bluetooth battery monitor watches the voltage trend over time; a multimeter reads voltage at a moment; this tests the capacity that decides whether the car starts.
