Owning an Electric Car: What Nobody Warned You About
Not the range anxiety everyone writes about. The 12 V battery, the tyre bill, the cable that lives in a puddle — the ordinary problems, and where each is answered.

The problems are not the ones the brochures argue about. Range anxiety mostly resolves itself in the first month. What persists is a set of ordinary, unglamorous things nobody mentions — and the most consequential one is a battery most owners do not know they have.

The second battery
The one to read first if you read only one.
There is an ordinary 12 V lead-acid battery in an electric car. It runs the computers, the lights and the contactors that connect the traction pack to everything else — so when it goes flat, a pack at 80% is electrically isolated and the car does not wake.
It is cheap, it fails the way every other lead-acid battery fails, and it gives you no warning, because there is no starter motor to crank slowly for a fortnight first. Checking its resting voltage occasionally is the whole preventative measure: the 12 V battery in an electric car.
The related trap is accessories. There is no alternator — a DC-DC converter tops the 12 V up on the car's schedule — so a dashcam or tracker that was harmlessly offset on a petrol car may not be here: 12 V accessories with no alternator.
Charging, which is mostly a housekeeping problem
Two separate questions get run together.
Do you need an installation? That turns on your daily mileage against the hours the car sits at home, not on charging speed in the abstract. For ordinary daily distances the supplied cable is frequently enough — and the socket it plugs into deserves an electrician's opinion, because a long continuous load is a different duty from a kettle: granny charger vs wallbox.
Where does the cable live? Weather is not what damages it; being driven over, pinched in a door and coiled tightly in the cold are. Getting it off the ground fixes most of that for very little: where the charging cable lives.
Winter, and an estimate that is wrong rather than low
Cabin heating has no waste engine heat to borrow, a cold pack is temporarily less willing, and cold dense air and wet roads add drag. Those three compound.
The estimate on the dash does not anticipate any of it — it projects from how you have recently been driving, so it offers a summer figure on the first cold morning and then falls faster than the miles you cover. Nothing is broken when that happens.
The most effective response is free: precondition while still plugged in, so the heating comes from the supply rather than the pack. Cold weather range and the estimate covers the rest, including the pressures nobody checks in January.
The tyre bill
Heavier for its size, instant torque from a standstill, and regenerative braking loading the driven axle. They wear faster, and because there is no engine noise you hear them doing it.
The expensive mistake is replacing them with the cheapest tyre in the right size: load index is the specification that matters, and rolling resistance is a running cost paid on every journey for the life of the tyre. Tyre wear on a heavier, quieter car.
The boot
Usually no spare wheel, so a puncture has no mechanical answer — a plug kit and a way to reinflate are the substitute, with honest limits.
And a jump pack, which sounds wrong in an electric car and is exactly right, because the battery that strands you is the small one. Jump leads can generally come out: what earns space in an EV boot.
The two things worth doing today
Not purchases. Both take ten minutes and both are only difficult at the roadside.
- Find the 12 V jump points and the manual door release in your handbook. On many EVs the jump points are terminals in the engine bay rather than the battery, the bonnet release may be electric, and the handbook itself may live on a screen that a flat 12 V will not turn on.
- Check your car's onboard AC charge rate. It is the ceiling on home charging, and it decides whether a more capable wallbox would give you anything at all.
What this list is not
An argument against electric cars. It is a list of ordinary maintenance realities that are not mentioned at the point of sale — which is the same complaint this site makes about every other kind of vehicle, and the reason it exists.
