Cleaning Windshield Molding Without Scratching Chrome
Bright trim on an older car is thin, plated and often irreplaceable. What is safe to use, what quietly removes plating, and how to tell them apart.

Bright trim around a windshield is one of the few parts of an older car where a cleaning mistake is effectively permanent. The plating or anodising is thin, the parts are frequently unavailable, and the pieces that are available are often the wrong profile for your year.
So the useful advice here is mostly about restraint.
Work out what the trim actually is
The right product depends entirely on the material, and "chrome" is used loosely for at least three different things:
Chrome-plated steel or plastic. A hard, very thin plated layer. Reasonably tolerant of gentle polishing, intolerant of anything aggressive — once through the plating you are looking at the substrate, and on steel that means rust.
Stainless steel. Common on windshield surrounds of the era. Solid metal rather than plated, so it genuinely can be polished and even lightly refinished. This is the most forgiving of the three.
Anodised aluminium. Very common on trim strips and door frames. The anodised layer is a converted surface, not a coating, and polishing through it leaves a dull grey patch that no amount of further polishing will restore. This is the one that catches people out.
A magnet distinguishes plated steel from the other two in a second. That is worth doing before opening any bottle.
The order of escalation
The principle: dissolve before you abrade, and abrade as little as you can get away with.
- Wash properly first. Most of what looks like damage is dirt, and grit dragged across trim during polishing is what actually causes the fine scratching people are trying to remove.
- A dedicated water-spot remover for mineral deposits. Chemical, not mechanical.
- A fine metal polish, only on materials that tolerate it, only by hand, and only after testing somewhere invisible.
- A protective wax or sealant afterwards, which does more for long-term appearance than polishing does.
What not to use
- Anything described as a scouring or restoring pad, including the fine ones. On plated or anodised trim these are not fine.
- Wheel cleaners on bright trim. Many are formulated with acids that stain or etch aluminium.
- Household abrasive creams. Formulated for enamel and ceramic, where taking a layer off does not matter.
- A rotary machine, on plated trim of unknown thickness. Heat and speed remove material far faster than judgement can react.

The rubber next to the metal
The seal alongside the trim is often in worse condition than the trim, and solvent-based products migrating onto it will dry it out and accelerate the cracking that leads to a leak.
Mask the rubber, or use a product safe on both, and treat the seal separately with something intended for it. On a car where a windshield removal is expensive and risky, the seal matters more than the shine.
The realistic outcome
Trim that has been outside for decades will not come back to as-new, and pursuing that is how it gets polished through. Clean, protected, and slightly imperfect is the correct target — and it is considerably better than the alternative.
