The Brushes That Clean Where a Vacuum Cannot
Vents, seams and switchgear need contact, not airflow. Which brush stiffness suits which surface, and the ferrule that does most of the damage.

Vacuum cleaners are bad at seams, vents, switchgear and the narrow ledges around old trim. They move air past the dirt instead of touching it. Small brushes and cleaning gel solve that by making contact.
They are odd-looking products, and the usefulness is real when the expectations stay modest.

The part that does the damage is not the bristles
Almost every mark left by a detailing brush comes from the ferrule — the metal band clamping the bristles into the handle.
Under light pressure the bristles do the work and the ferrule stays clear. Press harder and the bristles splay outward, which drops the ferrule closer to the surface until it makes contact. Then you are dragging metal across trim.
Two consequences worth internalising:
- Light pressure is a technique, not a courtesy. The brush cleans by agitation and repetition, not force, and pressing harder actively converts a safe tool into an unsafe one.
- Ferrule design matters when buying. Brushes with the metal covered, recessed or replaced by a moulded handle remove the risk entirely, and they cost very little more.

Matching stiffness to surface
A single brush for everything is how soft-touch plastic ends up looking scuffed.

Buy a set with a range rather than one brush you compromise with. They are cheap enough that this is not really a decision.

There is a powered version of the same idea, and it is worth being clear about what it changes. A hand brush agitates as hard as you push; a powered scrubber agitates at a fixed rate whether or not you are paying attention, which is the point on textured plastic and stitching and the risk on anything soft or already marked.

When to throw the gel away
Gel has a working life and using it past that is where the horror stories come from. It should stay tacky and lift cleanly. Once it starts leaving fragments behind, or feels dry and crumbly, or has visibly absorbed as much dust as it will hold, it is finished.
Warm interiors accelerate all of that. On a hot day, gel softens and works into textured grain rather than lifting off it, which turns a dust-removal tool into a residue problem.
The order that works
Brush first, vacuum second, gel last. The brush loosens dirt, the vacuum removes what is loose, and the gel picks up what remains in awkward shapes. Starting with gel just kneads dust into a product that then has to be thrown away sooner.
Vents deserve their own method
The usual approach — blowing compressed air into a vent — mostly relocates dust deeper into the ductwork, where it returns over the following week.
The version that works is to hold a vacuum nozzle at the vent opening and brush toward it, so the dust you dislodge is captured as it emerges rather than pushed further in. It is slower and it stays clean.
