Budget jump starters advertise larger peak-amp figures than established ones and cost a fraction as much. Either the established brands are charging for a badge, or the numbers do not mean what they appear to. It is mostly the second.

Peak amps is not a specification
There is no enforced standard for measuring the peak-amp figure on a jump starter. It describes an instantaneous maximum under conditions nobody defines, and it is measured by the seller.
What actually starts an engine is sustained current for several seconds at the temperature you are in, and almost nobody publishes that — which is precisely why the number that is easy to inflate is the one on the box.
So comparing a claimed peak figure between a known brand and an unknown one compares one measured quantity with one marketing quantity.
The number to ask for instead
NOCO publishes a capacity figure for the GB40: 24 watt-hours. That is a small pack, and saying so is not a criticism — it is the honest size for a device meant to deliver one short burst.
The useful part is that the number exists. Watt-hours describe stored energy, which is what decides how many attempts you get before recharging, and it is a figure that cannot be inflated without becoming checkable against the physical size of the unit.
Most budget listings do not state capacity anywhere. A missing specification is more informative than a large one.

Read that table as a pattern rather than a scorecard. Every row in the left column is a number someone committed to in writing. Most rows in the right column are absences.
Where the money genuinely goes
Disclosure. The least tangible item and arguably the largest. A published capacity, a published engine-size limit and a published IP rating are constraints a manufacturer has to live with. A single large amp figure commits to nothing.
Clamps and cable. The most visible honest difference. Current has to get from the pack to the battery, and thin cable with light clamps adds resistance exactly where it hurts most and gets hot doing it. This is inspectable in photographs and is a reliable tell.
Protection circuitry. Reverse-polarity protection is not exotic, but implementing it properly costs something. On an older car — where a positive-earth system or an unexpected battery orientation is a genuine possibility — this is the feature that stands between a mistake and a damaged ECU.
Cell consistency. A generic pack may perform close to a known one when new. The variance between individual units, and the behaviour after two years in a cold trunk, is where the difference shows.
Someone to complain to. Unglamorous, and it is a real part of what you are buying for a safety device.
Where budget units are genuinely fine
Being fair rather than reflexively cautious:
- Small engines, mild climates, occasional use. A modest four-cylinder in a temperate place asks much less of a jump starter than a large V8 in winter.
- As a second unit. Redundancy has value, and a cheap spare in another car is better than nothing in that car.
- As a power bank that also jump starts, if the jump starting is the secondary purpose.
- When the listing publishes real numbers. Some do. A budget unit stating watt-hours and engine guidance is a genuinely different product from one shouting an amp figure, and it deserves to be judged on what it discloses rather than on its price.
The gap matters most exactly where this site's readers are: older, larger, harder-starting engines.
What we would do
Buy the known unit, size it generously, and check it every few months. A jump starter that has sat uncharged for a year is not a safety device — a point covered in roadside readiness for an older car.
If the battery keeps going flat rather than occasionally being flat, the jump starter is treating a symptom. A monitor that warns you before it happens is the better purchase, as argued in Bluetooth battery monitors and drain warnings.

- Cheap, light, never go flat and never need charging. Useless when you are alone in an empty car park, which is when this matters.

- More sustained current for a big engine, at a weight most people stop carrying — which makes it the wrong answer for a car you drive rather than a workshop.

- A jump starter is a fallback. If the car flattens a battery repeatedly, the parasitic draw or the battery itself is the actual problem.
