The NOCO GB40 is the kind of product that gets recommended so often it becomes shorthand for the category. That is useful, and also dangerous: a jump starter is not good because the name is familiar. It is good only if the pack, clamps, protection circuitry and sizing match the car.

What it is trying to solve

The useful job is narrow: a car has enough battery to be basically healthy, but not enough to crank reliably. A compact jump pack bridges that gap without waiting for another vehicle.

That makes the GB40 a backup, not a cure. If the same car repeatedly needs a jump, the battery, charging system or standing drain is the actual fault. A jump starter in that situation is just a portable way to keep ignoring the problem.

The two numbers that matter, and they pull in opposite directions

The advertised figure is 1000 amps peak. The figure that decides how the unit behaves in practice is 24 watt-hours.

Peak amperage describes the instantaneous maximum. Watt-hours describe how much energy is actually stored. A 24Wh pack is small — comparable to a modest phone power bank — and that is a deliberate design choice, because the energy required for one short crank is genuinely modest when the battery is merely low rather than dead.

The consequence is the honest limit of the product. One clean start on a healthy-but-flat battery is well within it. Four attempts on a cold, tired, large-displacement engine that cranks for eight seconds each time is not, and no peak-amp figure changes that arithmetic.

Who should buy it

Buy the GB40 if the car normally starts well, the battery is healthy, and the problem you are buying against is occasional bad luck: a light left on, a cold morning, or a battery that has dipped just below the point where the starter is happy. That is the most honest use case for a compact lithium pack.

It also makes sense if space is the reason you will actually carry it. A larger booster left in the garage is less useful than a smaller one checked and kept in the trunk. Emergency products fail as systems more often than they fail as hardware: not charged, not packed, not reachable, not understood.

Who should avoid it

Avoid relying on it as the only plan for a large-displacement classic that already cranks slowly. That vehicle may need a higher-capacity booster, a better battery, cleaner cables, or a starter diagnosis. Where the reputation is justified

The important difference is not a peak amp number. It is the combination of clamp quality, cable substance, protection circuitry, published capacity and consistency from one unit to the next. Those are the things a cheap listing can hide behind a larger printed number — and the reason NOCO publishing a 24Wh figure at all is worth something, since much of the budget end of the category declines to state capacity anywhere.

For a modern four-cylinder daily driver, many smaller packs will probably do enough. For a larger or older engine, the margins matter more. The starter may draw harder, the car may crank longer, and the battery cables may be less forgiving than the neat diagrams in a product manual.

Where it stops being enough

The compact form is the selling point and the constraint. It is easy to keep in the trunk, which means it may actually be there when needed. It also means the pack cannot be expected to do workshop booster duty — 24 watt-hours is a decision, and this is the side of it you live with.
