The problem, as it appears

The machine was fine. Now it is louder than it used to be, temperatures are up, and opening it reveals something that is not really dust — a felted grey layer across the front intake that comes away in one piece.

The instinct is that the filters are inadequate. They are usually fine. What has changed is how fast they load.

Why treating it as a dust problem disappoints

Because hair and dust fail a filter differently.

Dust is fine and largely passive: some passes through, some accumulates in the depth of the mesh, and the restriction increases gradually. Hair is long and it catches — one fibre snags on the mesh, the next snags on that one, and within weeks the openings are bridged by a mat rather than filled.

That distinction has two practical consequences. The blockage arrives faster and more suddenly than a dust curve would suggest. And it sits on the surface, which is good news: it lifts off in one piece rather than needing to be worked out of the weave.

So the strategy is not a better filter. It is a filter you will actually take off, and a shorter interval between doing it.

What actually matters

A finer filter is the wrong answer here

The intuitive response to material getting through is a finer mesh. Against hair this is backwards on both counts.

A finer filter blocks sooner, because the openings it needs to bridge are smaller. And it costs more airflow the whole time it is in place — the trade covered properly in dust filters and the airflow they cost.

What you want is a filter that comes off without tools and goes back on in seconds, because that is what determines whether it gets cleaned in month two or month nine.

Height is the biggest single change

Hair concentrates near the floor and gets re-suspended constantly by movement — animal movement most of all.

A case standing on carpet has its underside intake a centimetre or two above a reservoir of exactly the material that blocks it fastest. Raising it a few centimetres puts it above the worst layer, and the underside filter is the one nobody checks because reaching it means moving the machine.

Close the openings that are not filtered

An unused fan mount is an unfiltered intake. So is a missing expansion slot cover. Air takes the easiest route in, and the easiest route is the one with nothing across it.

In a dusty house this matters at the margin. With hair in circulation it matters more, because unfiltered openings are where the material arrives inside rather than on a filter you can lift off.

Positive pressure works in your favour

If intake airflow exceeds exhaust, the case is slightly pressurised and air leaves through gaps rather than entering through them. Every route in is then a filtered one.

It is the same principle that applies to dust, and it is more valuable here for the same reason as above: what you are trying to prevent is material bypassing the filters entirely.

Cleaning technique, and the one rule

Take it outside. Hair blown out of a case indoors lands in the room and returns.

The mistake to avoid

Buying a finer filter because material is getting through. Against hair, finer means blocking sooner and costing more airflow while it does — and the machine that results runs hotter and louder than the one you started with. The variable to change is how often the filter comes off.

The second mistake is cleaning the machine and not the room. The filters are catching what is in circulation, and a machine standing on carpet in the path of an animal is being asked to filter a supply that is continuously replenished. Raising it, and moving it out of the main traffic route, does more than any component in this list.

Why is pet hair worse than ordinary dust?
