What separates a maintainer from a trickle charger, which features matter for an older car, and where the cheap units genuinely fall short.

The word "trickle charger" is doing a lot of damage. It describes an older type of device that delivers constant current and will steadily destroy a battery left on it for a season, and it is still used casually to mean the modern devices that will not.

If a car sits over winter, this is the single purchase most likely to pay for itself, and the selection criteria are narrower than the product listings suggest.

What actually matters

Most of the specifications printed on the box do not affect the outcome. These do:

It must be a maintainer, not a charger. The device has to stop when the battery is full and resume when it drops. Look for a described multi-stage or float behaviour. If the documentation only gives an output current and says nothing about what happens at full charge, treat it as a charger.

It must match the chemistry. A conventional flooded lead-acid battery, an AGM, and a lithium replacement want different charge profiles. Charging an AGM on a flooded profile shortens its life; charging lithium on a lead-acid profile can be genuinely dangerous. Most classics have flooded lead-acid, but a surprising number have been converted.

It should tolerate being ignored. The realistic use case is connect it in November, walk away, come back in March. Anything requiring intervention will not get it.

Amperage matters less than people think. For maintenance, a low output is fine and arguably better. High amperage matters only if you also want the device to recover a flat battery quickly, which is a different job.

The trade is straightforward: more capability, more cost, more physical size, and a device with modes you need to understand before using. The reconditioning function in particular is not something to run casually — it applies a higher voltage deliberately, and that is not appropriate for every battery type.

Things worth knowing before you buy

Check the parasitic draw first. A maintainer sized for self-discharge will struggle against an aftermarket alarm or a modern stereo with a memory. If a car flattens a good battery in under three weeks, the problem is a current draw and a maintainer is treating a symptom.

A ring-terminal harness is the accessory that determines whether you use it. Permanently attached to the battery, routed to somewhere you can reach without opening anything. Without it, connecting becomes a job and gets skipped.

Where the car is stored decides the shortlist. No power in the garage means the battery comes out or you use a solar maintainer, which is a genuinely different product with genuinely different limitations.

A maintainer will not fix a bad battery. If it was struggling in autumn, replace it. A maintainer holding a sulfated battery at float is still a sulfated battery in spring.

Who should buy which one

For one healthy stored classic, the low-output maintainer is usually the cleanest answer. The battery does not need a fast charger while it sleeps; it needs correct float behaviour and enough intelligence not to cook itself. That is why the smallest credible unit often makes more sense than the largest one on the shelf.

For a car that arrives at winter already weak, step back. If the battery is old, replace it. If the car drains batteries quickly, measure the draw before buying a charger. If the car is parked away from power, the maintainer question becomes a storage-location question, not a charger comparison.

Questions people actually ask

What is the difference between a trickle charger and a maintainer?
A true trickle charger pushes a small constant current regardless of what the battery needs, which will overcharge and eventually boil a battery left connected for months. A maintainer monitors voltage and only delivers current when the battery has dropped, then stops. Only the second type is safe to leave connected unattended, which is the entire point.
Can I leave a maintainer connected all winter?
That is what they are designed for, provided it is genuinely a maintainer rather than a constant-current charger, and provided the battery is in reasonable health. A failing battery with an internal short can draw current continuously, and that is a fire risk regardless of how good the charger is.
Does the battery need to come out of the car?
Not if you can run a lead to it. Most maintainers include a ring-terminal harness that stays bolted to the battery permanently with a connector routed somewhere reachable, which makes connecting a two-second job rather than a bonnet-up job. On a car stored somewhere without power, removing the battery is the practical option.
