Cold Weather Range and the Estimate

The number on the dash is a prediction, not a measurement. It is built from how you have recently been driving, so after a mild week it will confidently offer a summer figure on the first cold morning — and then fall faster than the miles you cover.
Nothing is broken when that happens. Understanding what the estimate assumes is worth more than any product on this page, and the most effective habit — preconditioning while still plugged in — costs nothing at all.

The problem, as it appears
November. The same commute you have done all year now costs noticeably more of the battery, and the estimate that said 210 miles when you left says 120 by the time you are halfway.
It reads like a fault, or like the battery has aged badly over one weekend. It is neither.
Why the obvious explanation disappoints
The obvious explanation is that cold has damaged the battery. It has not — cold-weather capability is temporary and recovers as the pack warms.
What is actually happening is three separate costs arriving together:
Cabin heating has no free source. A combustion car heats its cabin with waste heat it was producing anyway. An electric car has almost none to spare, so warmth comes out of the same energy that moves the car. On a cold morning that is a substantial and continuous draw.
A cold pack is less willing. Chemistry slows at low temperature, so both the energy you can take out and the rate you can put back in are reduced until it warms.
The road and the air are harder work. Cold air is denser, wet or slushy roads increase rolling resistance, and winter tyres — where fitted — have higher resistance by design.
Each is modest. Together they are the difference you are seeing.
And the estimate does not know any of it in advance. It projects from recent history, which is why it is not merely lower but wrong at the start of the journey, in the direction that catches people out.

What actually matters
1. Preconditioning, while still plugged in
The most effective winter habit, and it is free.
Warming the cabin and the battery from the supply rather than from the pack means you leave with a warm car and a full battery instead of a warm car and a battery that has already paid for it. On most cars this is scheduled from an app or the car's own timer.
2. Speed, which dominates everything else
Aerodynamic drag rises steeply with speed, so a sustained motorway pace costs disproportionately more than the same distance covered more slowly. In winter that penalty lands on top of the other three costs.
If a winter journey is marginal, the lever with the most travel in it is the right-hand pedal.
3. Tyre pressures, which nobody checks in winter
Cold air contracts, so pressures drop exactly when everything else is already working against you. Underinflated tyres cost range in any season; in January they are quietly low as well.

Check them cold, before driving, and check them again when the weather turns. This is the cheapest range measure there is and the most neglected.

4. Heating what is cold rather than everything
Seat and steering wheel heating warm the parts of you that feel cold, for a fraction of what heating the whole cabin volume costs. On a short commute that swap is close to free range.
The options, and who each suits
There is very little to buy here, and saying so is the honest version of this page. What helps is mostly habit.
Plan on the figure you have seen, not the one displayed
Note what a winter journey actually costs you once, and plan from that. The estimate resets its optimism every mild week; your own record does not.

The mistake to avoid
Treating the first cold week as evidence of degradation. It is the single most common winter conclusion and it is wrong. Cold-weather reduction is temporary and reverses; genuine degradation is slow, small and measured over years rather than over a weekend.
If you want to know about the pack's real health, compare like with like — the same journey, in similar weather, a year apart. A January figure against a July one tells you about January.
The second mistake is charging to full every night out of winter anxiety. Manufacturers publish daily charge limits for a reason, and habitually ignoring them to buy back range that the cold is only temporarily taking is a poor trade against the pack's long-term health. Check what your own handbook says rather than the internet's version of it.
