Tyre Wear on a Heavier, Quieter Car
EVs eat tyres faster and you hear every one of them. Which specification actually matters, and why the cheapest replacement is the most expensive mistake.

They wear faster, and you hear every one of them. An electric car is heavier for its size, it delivers torque instantly from a standstill, and regenerative braking loads the driven axle in a way engine braking does not. All three act on the same contact patch.
The failure that costs the most is replacing them with the cheapest tyre in the right size. Load index is the specification that actually matters, and rolling resistance is a running cost you pay on every journey for the life of the tyre.

The problem, as it appears
The tyres are down to the wear markers noticeably sooner than on the last car. The fronts, or the rears depending on which axle drives, have gone first and unevenly.
And the cabin is loud on coarse surfaces in a way it was not when the car was new — which is the tyres, audible for the first time because there is no engine covering them.
Why the obvious fix disappoints
The obvious fix is to replace like for like on size and price. It disappoints in two directions.
Size is not specification. Two tyres in the same size can carry different load ratings, and a heavier car needs the higher one. Fitting a tyre rated for less than the car requires is not a saving, it is a fault, and the placard on the door pillar is the authority rather than the fitter's stock.
Rolling resistance is a running cost. A cheaper tyre with higher resistance costs range on every journey for the whole life of the tyre. Set against the purchase saving, that is frequently a bad trade — and it is invisible, so nobody attributes the lost miles to the tyre.
There is a third, which is comfort rather than money: a noisy tread pattern that was masked by an engine on the old car is not masked on this one.

What actually matters
1. Load index, first and without compromise
The tyre has to be rated for the weight. Check the placard, check what is being fitted, and do not accept "it's the same size" as an answer to a question about load rating.
2. Pressure, checked more often than you think
Heavier cars are less forgiving of underinflation, and the resulting wear is uneven and permanent — you cannot recover a shoulder that has been scrubbed away.
Monthly, cold, before driving. And again whenever the temperature drops, because cold air lowers pressures exactly when the roads are worst.

3. Reading the wear, not just the depth
Both shoulders worn, centre fine: chronically underinflated. Centre worn, shoulders fine: chronically overinflated. One shoulder only: alignment, and worth investigating before new tyres are fitted to the same geometry. Feathered or scalloped: suspension or alignment, and again worth solving first.

Measure across the tread rather than at one point. The pattern of wear tells you what is wrong; a single number only tells you when to worry.

4. Rotation, where the handbook allows it
Wear is frequently concentrated on the driven axle. Where the manufacturer permits rotation and the tyres are not directional or staggered, it evens out what would otherwise be one pair replaced twice as often.
The options, and who each suits
Replace with an equivalent specification
The default. Match load index and speed rating, and treat rolling resistance and noise ratings as real criteria rather than as small print — on this car they are the two you will notice.
Prioritise noise if the car is otherwise quiet
Legitimate and often overlooked. Cabin noise on an EV is largely tyre noise, and the difference between tread patterns is audible in a way it simply was not on a combustion car.
Carry a plug kit, because many have no spare
Most EVs have no spare wheel — the space is battery or boot. A plug kit is not a repair, and it is the difference between a slow puncture ending the journey and not.

The mistake to avoid
Buying on size and price alone. It is the standard way to buy tyres and it is the wrong one here: the load rating may be inadequate, the rolling resistance costs you range every day, and the noise is no longer hidden by an engine.
The second mistake is fitting new tyres to a car with an alignment problem. The wear pattern on the old set is evidence, and it is worth reading before it is thrown away — otherwise the new set wears out the same way, and the fault is diagnosed at twice the price.
The cold-weather half of the pressure problem, and everything else that quietly costs range in winter, is in cold weather range and the estimate.
