Dropped a Bolt Into the Engine Bay? Recover It

Four cheap tools cover the four ways a dropped fastener hides: magnetic for steel, a claw for the rest, a mirror to see it, and a borescope to reach deep.

A fastener vanishing into the engine bay is not a disaster, but it becomes one if you reach for the wrong tool, or start the engine, or give up and buy a replacement for something that is six inches away behind a bracket.

Four cheap tools cover the four ways a dropped item hides. Which you reach for depends on two questions: is it magnetic, and can you see it?

First, before any tool

Stop, and do not start the engine.

A bolt resting on a subframe, a cradle or the top of the gearbox is retrievable at your leisure. The same bolt shaken into a running belt, a cooling fan or down onto an exhaust manifold is a different and worse problem. Note roughly where it fell before it has a chance to migrate, and get a light onto the area — half of these recoveries are really a lighting problem wearing a retrieval costume.

3. The mirror — to see the easy ones

A telescoping inspection mirror is the cheapest and quickest way to look at anything you can light and angle a view onto — the far side of a bracket, the top of a bellhousing, the back of an alternator. It finds the object; the claw or the magnet retrieves it.

Its limit is a straight line of sight. If seeing the object needs a view around a corner or inside something, no amount of angling a mirror gets there, and that is the borescope's job.

4. The borescope — to reach around corners

The tool that stops you needing any of them

Recovery is the cure. The prevention is putting the correct surface within reach before you start, because most "dropped" fasteners are not dropped — they are set down on nothing while your hands are full.

What is the first thing to do when a bolt disappears?
Stop, and do not start the engine. A fastener resting on a subframe or a cradle is retrievable; the same fastener shaken into a belt, a fan or an exhaust manifold is a different problem. Note roughly where it fell before it moves, and get a light on the area before you reach for a tool.
Which tool do I reach for first?
A magnet, if the item is steel. It is the only tool that acts at a distance without you seeing the object, so it recovers things wedged where no hand and no eye will reach. If a magnet does nothing, the item is aluminium, brass, plastic or stainless, and the job becomes a claw-and-look one instead.
Why will a magnet not pick up my bolt?
Because it is not ferrous. Stainless fasteners, brass fittings, aluminium parts and every plastic clip ignore a magnet entirely, and this catches people out because the bolt looks metallic. If the magnetic pickup passes straight over it, that is the diagnosis — switch to a flexible claw grabber.
Do I need a borescope, or will a mirror do?
A mirror is faster and cheaper for anything you can light and angle a view onto — the near side of a bracket, the top of a bellhousing. A borescope earns its place when the object is around a corner, down a duct, or inside something, where no straight line of sight exists. They are complementary: the mirror finds the easy ones, the borescope reaches the rest.
What borescope diameter should I choose?
It is a trade. A 5.5 mm tip reaches into confined places — spark plug holes, intake ducts, defrost vents — that an 8 mm one will not, while the larger tip usually gives a better image. For general recovery and inspection the 5.5 mm is the more versatile, since the tightest gaps are exactly where you cannot see with anything else.
WiFi or USB borescope?
USB, plugged straight into the phone, is the more stable connection and the one to prefer. WiFi models add lag between moving the tip and seeing it move, which is genuinely awkward when you are steering a camera by feel down a gap. WiFi's advantage is that nothing is tethered to the phone, which matters only if the reach demands it.

Put the correct surface within reach before you start.
