Getting Unstuck From Snow, Mud and Wet Grass
Spinning a wheel polishes the surface under it into something slicker — traction boards work because they stop the wheel spinning, not because they add grip.

Why the wheel spinning is the problem, not the solution
A spinning tyre generates heat at the contact patch, and heat changes what is under it. On snow, it melts a film of water and then polishes that film into ice — a genuinely lower-friction surface than the snow you arrived on. On mud, it churns the surface into slurry and simultaneously digs the wheel deeper into a hole it now has to climb out of.
This is why the second attempt is harder than the first, and the third harder again. Each attempt is actively degrading the surface you are trying to drive on.
So the goal is not more grip. It is stopping the wheel from spinning at all.
What a traction board actually does
It gives the tyre a solid surface with teeth in it, sitting at the bottom of the hole where the tyre can bite, and ramping up to the level you want to reach. The lugs stop the board sliding away and stop the tyre spinning on it; the ramp lets the car climb out rather than requiring it to jump.

What separates a board that survives from one that does not
Traction boards look interchangeable and are not. Four things decide it, none of which is obvious from a photograph.
Material. Fibre-reinforced nylon is the stronger construction — tougher molecular structure, more resistant to flex and to the heat a spinning tyre puts into it. Basic polypropylene is lighter and cheaper, and gives up strength to get there. On a heavy vehicle, that difference shows up as a board that bows under load rather than lifting it.
Load rating, matched to the vehicle. Boards state a rating; better ones are in the region of ten tons. Heavier vans and full-size trucks need longer, thicker boards specifically because a board that flexes under the weight is transferring the load into the ground it was meant to bridge.
Replaceable lugs. This is the one worth looking for, because the lugs are the wear part. The failure mode this page already warns about — spinning a wheel on the board and melting the teeth — is recoverable if the lugs unbolt and irreversible if they are moulded in.
UV resistance. These live on a roof rack or in a truck bed, so sun exposure is the normal condition rather than an edge case. UV degradation is the usual reason cheap boards crack and fade, and it happens while they are in storage rather than in use.
What actually matters
Dig first. This is the step people skip and it is most of the job. The board has to sit against the tyre and level with the bottom of it. If the wheel has dug in, a board laid on the surface sits on the lip of the hole, and the tyre rides up onto it and straight back off.

Clear the path ahead, not just under the wheel. Getting the car moving and then immediately stopping it against undisturbed snow means doing the whole thing again a metre further on.
Straighten the steering. Turned wheels have to push snow or mud sideways as well as move the car forward. Straight ahead is the lowest-resistance direction out.
Highest gear that will pull, lightest throttle that will move. Both reduce the torque available to break traction. This is counterintuitive and it is the whole technique.
The honest limit
Traction boards get a car out of a surface it cannot grip. They do not get a car out of a hole it has dropped into, off an obstacle it is grounded on, or up a gradient it lacks the traction to climb in the first place. Past that point the answer is being pulled out, which is a recovery strap and a rated recovery point — and emphatically not a tie-down strap.
If the car is stuck somewhere traffic is moving past, making the car visible comes before any of this. The rest of what genuinely earns its space in winter is in winter car gear that is not just marketing.
