Marketed as 5A, rated at 4.3A, and without the supply mode most buyers assume it has. A capable 8-step charger — and more than one stored car needs.

This is a charger rather than a maintainer that also charges, and the distinction is worth being clear about, because it changes who should buy it.

What it does that a maintainer does not

Three things, in descending order of how often they matter.

It charges at a useful rate

A flat battery goes from unusable to usable in an afternoon rather than a weekend. If you have more than one vehicle, this alone justifies it. The 0.8A small-battery setting extends the same device down to motorcycle and garden machinery batteries, so one charger genuinely covers the range from a 1.2Ah bike battery to a 110Ah car battery.

It attempts recovery

The reconditioning stage targets sulfation on flooded batteries left discharged, applying a documented 15.8V rather than the 14.4V of a normal charge. Calling it a repair overstates it — it is a controlled attempt that sometimes buys time — but it is a real capability a float-only maintainer does not have.

It tells you whether the battery is worth keeping

The 8-step programme includes a diagnosis stage that checks whether the battery can accept and then retain a charge. That is more useful than it sounds. The most expensive mistake in this category is nursing a battery through a winter that was never going to survive it, and a charger that will tell you so early is doing something a float-only device cannot.

What it does badly

  • No supply mode — a common and costly assumption, and the reason some buyers return it
  • Named 5.0, rated 4.3A; the model number flatters the output slightly
  • Modes require understanding — the wrong selection on the wrong chemistry is the real risk
  • Bulkier than a maintainer, which matters for permanent installation
  • Pays for capability that a single-stored-car owner will never use
  • Reconditioning cannot rescue a battery with a genuinely failed cell, and may raise false hope

The ugly score, and the size

Ugly 5. It is a bright, chunky, unmistakably industrial plastic block with a display panel, and it does not disappear anywhere. In a workshop that is fine. Permanently installed in the engine bay of a car you care about the look of, it is more visible than a small maintainer.

Size is the practical version of the same point: it takes up meaningfully more room in a bag, on a shelf, or wedged next to a battery. The IP65 rating buys back some of that, because a unit you can leave in a slightly damp garage without worrying is a unit you do not have to keep moving.

Value, and why the score is lower than the capability

Fix score 9, value score 6, and that gap is the review.

The device does its job very well. But most people asking "what should I put my stored classic on" have exactly one healthy battery and need exactly float maintenance — and for that specific job a cheaper, smaller device performs identically. Paying more for modes you will never select is not good value however good the modes are.

Flip that around and the value score flips too: two or more vehicles, a motorcycle as well as a car, or one battery worth trying to save, and this becomes the sensible purchase.

Who this actually suits

A garage with more than one thing in it. The wide capacity range, the diagnosis stage and the recovery attempt all pay off across several batteries of different ages, and none of them pay off across one healthy battery that only needs holding at float.

Would we buy it again?

Questions people actually ask

What does the reconditioning mode actually do?
It applies a controlled higher voltage — a published 15.8V on this model — for a period, intended to reverse some sulfation on a flooded lead-acid battery that has been left discharged. It is not a repair and it will not restore a battery with a failed cell. It is also not appropriate for every chemistry, which is why it is a deliberate selection rather than an automatic stage.
Can it power the car's electronics during a battery change?
No. The MXS 5.0 does not have a supply mode, despite this being one of the most common assumptions about it. Supply mode — a constant voltage output intended to hold memory alive with the battery disconnected — starts higher up the range with the MXS 7.0 and MXS 10. If memory retention is why you are buying, buy one of those instead.
Why is a charger called 5.0 rated at 4.3A?
The model number reflects the product family rather than the measured output. CTEK's own specification lists a maximum charging current of 4.3A. It is a small discrepancy and it does not change what the charger is good for, but it is worth knowing before you compare it on amperage against something advertising a genuine 5A.
What size battery will it handle?
The published range is 1.2Ah to 110Ah for charging, and it will maintain batteries up to 160Ah. That covers motorcycles at the bottom end through to large car and light commercial batteries, which is a genuinely wide span and part of why it suits someone with several vehicles.
Can it be used outdoors or in a damp garage?
It carries an IP65 rating, meaning dust-tight and protected against low-pressure water jets. That is a materially better rating than most maintainers in this class and makes it the more sensible choice if the car lives somewhere less than perfectly dry.
Will it start charging a deeply discharged battery?
Its published start voltage is 2.0V, so it will engage with a battery far flatter than many chargers will acknowledge. Whether the battery is worth recovering at that point is a separate question — the 8-step programme includes a diagnosis stage intended to tell you whether the battery can accept and hold a charge at all.
