These two get compared constantly, and the comparison is usually framed as cheap versus good. That is the wrong axis. They are built for different jobs, and the more expensive one is not an upgrade so much as a different tool.

Where the money actually goes
The larger unit's price buys three things: charge rate, a reconditioning attempt, and a diagnosis stage.
Charge rate is the 4.3A against 1A line, and it matters only if you regularly arrive at a flat battery. For a car on a maintainer all winter, you never do. The capacity ratings say the same thing more precisely: the MXS 5.0 is rated to charge up to 110Ah, the GENIUS1 only to 30Ah. Since a normal car battery sits above 30Ah, NOCO is telling you plainly that charging a car battery from flat is not what its unit is for.
Reconditioning is worth having exactly once per tired battery, and it is not a repair — it is a controlled attempt at a documented 15.8V that sometimes buys months. If the battery has a failed cell, nothing here helps.
The diagnosis stage is the underrated one. The MXS 5.0's eight-step programme checks whether the battery can accept and hold a charge at all, which is how you find out in November that a battery was never going to survive until March.
For a single healthy battery, the three things you are paying for are things you own rather than things you use.
Where the cheaper unit genuinely falls short
Being fair in the other direction:
- Recovering a flat battery is impractical. A 1A output against a 30Ah charging rating means days for a normal car battery, and most people give up and borrow a charger instead — at which point the saving evaporated.
- The feedback is minimal. Indicator lights report what the charger is doing, not what the battery is like. You learn nothing about capacity or health, and there is no equivalent of the diagnosis step.
- It is the less weatherproof of the two. IP60 against IP65 is the difference between "keep it dry" and "it will survive a damp garage".
- It scales badly. Two cars means either moving it back and forth or buying a second one.
Where the cheaper unit wins outright
One line in the table goes entirely the other way, and it is easy to miss: the GENIUS1 supports 6V batteries and the MXS 5.0 does not.
For most readers this is irrelevant. For anyone with a pre-1955 car, a vintage tractor, an early motorcycle or anything else still on its original 6V system, it is decisive — the more capable charger simply cannot do the job at all, and no amount of extra amperage compensates for the wrong voltage.

This is the comparison people search for, and it is not the like-for-like one. Worth saying plainly, because the model numbers actively mislead.
NOCO names its chargers after their amperage. CTEK does not. A GENIUS1 delivers 1A, a GENIUS2 delivers 2A, a GENIUS5 delivers 5A — the number is the specification. The MXS 5.0 is not 5A. It is rated at 4.3A, which is the first thing the CTEK MXS 5.0 review says about it.
So a reader comparing "5.0 against 1" believes they are looking at a fivefold difference between two devices of the same kind. Neither half of that is right: the gap is 4.3A against 1A, and the two are not the same kind of device at all. One charges. One holds.
On charging current alone, the NOCO that lines up with an MXS 5.0 is the GENIUS5. A GENIUS2 is under half its current. A GENIUS10 is more than double it, and is a different purchase decision entirely — bigger batteries, shorter charge times, and far more device than a stored classic will ever ask for.
We have not assessed the GENIUS2, GENIUS5 or GENIUS10, and none of this is a recommendation of them. It answers a narrower question — which model number corresponds to which — because the naming makes that genuinely hard to work out, and getting it wrong means buying a maintainer when you wanted a charger, or paying for four times the current you have any use for.
And if maintenance is all you actually need, the amperage ladder is the wrong ladder to be climbing. 1A holds a healthy battery at float exactly as well as 10A does. The rest of this page is about that distinction, which is the one that decides the purchase.
If you came here asking which one for an AGM battery
The other half of the same search, and it resolves the same way: chemistry does not separate these two units. Both offer chemistry-specific modes, including AGM. Neither is the AGM charger and the other the flooded one.
What AGM changes is the voltage profile, not the current. An AGM is sealed, so it cannot be topped up — whatever electrolyte it gasses off through overcharging is gone permanently, and that is why it is less tolerant of being held high once it is already full. A charger with an AGM mode is a charger that knows to stop doing that. It is not a charger that needs to be bigger.
So amperage is still set by the two things it was set by before: how much capacity you are filling, and how flat it is. An AGM in a small car battery does not want more current than a flooded one of the same size. A reader moving from an MXS 5.0 to a GENIUS10 on the strength of having an AGM is buying more than double the charge rate to solve a problem that is about voltage.
The trap is EFB, not AGM. Any car with stop-start almost certainly has one or the other, and an EFB — enhanced flooded battery — is a flooded battery. If the label says EFB, the AGM mode is the wrong selection, not the right one. This is the same distinction the battery tester guide raises for conductance testing, for the same reason: the chemistry setting is a claim about what is inside the case, and getting it wrong gives you a confidently wrong result rather than an obvious failure.
A reconditioning mode is not a chemistry mode. The larger unit's reconditioning stage deliberately raises voltage to attack sulfation, which is the opposite of what a sealed battery wants. Read what your battery's manufacturer permits before selecting it on anything sealed. That mode is a reason the larger unit "requires understanding modes" in the table above, and on an AGM it is a reason to leave it alone.

Ask one question: how many batteries, what voltage, what condition, and what chemistry?
- 6V system → the GENIUS1, and there is no debate.
- One, healthy, 12V → the smaller maintainer.
- One, tired and worth a rescue attempt → the larger charger.
- Several, or anything above 30Ah needing actual charging → the larger charger.
- AGM, or any sealed battery → either one, on its AGM mode. Chemistry does not decide this; capacity does.
- The label says EFB → either one, on a flooded mode. EFB is not AGM.
- One, on a simple classic, with no socket in the garage → neither. Take the battery out.
