The problem with convenient inflators

Nearly every compact inflator plugs into an accessory socket, because that is what people want. On a car built in the last twenty years with a properly rated circuit, that is fine.

The number that decides it

This unit draws up to 20A. Accessory circuits are commonly fused at 10A or 15A, and on a car from the 1970s or 1980s the lighter circuit was specified to run a cigarette lighter — its fuse rating frequently sits well below what a compressor needs under load.

That is not a marginal mismatch. It is a compressor asking for more current than the circuit is permitted to deliver, and the failure is not subtle: the fuse goes, usually partway through the first tire, generally at the roadside.

Connecting directly to the battery sidesteps this entirely. It is less convenient every single time, and it works every single time, which is the correct trade for equipment carried against a problem you cannot predict.

Ugly score 6

It is a squat black-and-yellow plastic compressor with a coiled hose, two crocodile clamps and a long power lead, and it comes in a bag that never closes properly again after the first use. It looks like equipment, which is more or less the honest description.

The clamps are the ugly part in practice: leads draped over a wing while a pump chatters away is not a good look outside a nice restaurant, and there is no version of this that is discreet.

What to check before relying on it

The single most useful thing anyone can do with an inflator is use it once at home before needing it. Specifically:

  • Does the hose reach the rear valves with the unit sitting where the leads reach the battery? Sixteen feet is generous, but on a long car with the battery in the trunk the geometry can still surprise you.
  • How hot does it get doing four tires in sequence, in the ambient temperature you actually park in? The 25-minute duty cycle is quoted at 30 PSI; work closer to the 120 PSI ceiling and the thermal picture changes.
  • Does the chuck seal on your valve stems without holding it at an angle?

Where it stops being right

The hood-open requirement is the honest cost, and it is worse than it sounds in the specific conditions you actually need an inflator: bad weather, poor light, a narrow shoulder, a tight parking garage. A socket-powered unit is genuinely nicer to use on every occasion it works at all.

The IP53 rating compounds that. Limited dust and spray protection is fine for a driveway top-up and thin cover for a roadside stop in real rain. Neither point is a reason to avoid the unit on an older car — the alternative is an inflator that cannot be powered — but they are the reasons a modern-car owner should buy something else.

Would we buy it again?

Yes, for an older car. The reasoning is entirely about the power connection, and it is the kind of unglamorous specification that decides whether equipment works when it is needed. A 20A draw and a 10A fuse is a fact about the car, not an opinion about the pump.

Why not just use the cigarette lighter socket?
Because this compressor draws up to 20A, and most accessory circuits are fused well below that — commonly 10A or 15A, and lower still on older cars where the circuit was specified to run a cigarette lighter and nothing else. Will it inflate a truck or camper tire?
