VIAIR 88P Review: Battery Clamps Beat Convenience
A 12 V compressor that connects to the battery instead of the lighter socket — which is exactly why it works on older cars when cheaper units do not.

The interesting thing about this compressor is not its performance. It is the connector on the end of the power lead, and the fact that choosing battery clamps over a lighter plug is what makes it work on the cars this site is mostly about.

The problem with convenient inflators
Nearly every compact inflator plugs into an accessory socket, because that is what people want. On a car built in the last twenty years with a properly rated circuit, that is fine.
On a car from the 1970s or 1980s, the lighter circuit was specified to run a cigarette lighter. Its fuse rating frequently sits below what a compressor draws under load. The failure is not subtle: the fuse goes, usually partway through the first tire, generally at the roadside.
Connecting directly to the battery sidesteps this entirely. It is less convenient every single time, and it works every single time, which is the correct trade for equipment carried against a problem you cannot predict.
What it does well
- Battery-clamp connection works regardless of the car's accessory circuit rating
- Duty cycle appropriate for doing a full set of tires rather than one
- Substantial hose and fittings rather than the thin tubing common at the cheap end
- Sensible for older vehicles specifically, where most inflators are a gamble

- Hood must be open, which is slower and unpleasant in bad weather
- Genuinely bulky — this is trunk equipment, not glovebox equipment
- Gauge is indicative rather than precise, especially while running

It is a squat black-and-yellow plastic compressor with a coiled hose, two crocodile clamps and a long power lead, and it comes in a bag that never closes properly again after the first use. It looks like equipment, which is more or less the honest description.
The clamps are the ugly part in practice: leads draped over a wing while a pump chatters away is not a good look outside a nice restaurant, and there is no version of this that is discreet.
What to check before relying on it
The single most useful thing you can do with any inflator is use it once at home before needing it. Specifically:
- Does the hose reach the rear valves with the unit sitting where the leads reach the battery? On a long car this is a genuine question.
- How hot does it get doing four tires in sequence, in the ambient temperature you actually park in?
- Does the chuck seal on your valve stems without holding it at an angle?

Yes, for an older car. The reasoning is entirely about the power connection, and it is the kind of unglamorous specification that decides whether equipment works when it is needed.

If this is not right for you
- A cordless inflator on a tool battery
- Far more convenient with no vehicle connection at all, and the better choice if you already own the battery platform and mostly do top-ups.
- A socket-powered inflator
- Smaller, cheaper and adequate on a modern car with a properly rated accessory circuit. Frequently inadequate on anything older, which is the whole point of this review.
- A foot pump
- Slow, tiring and completely immune to electrical problems, flat batteries and fuses. Genuinely reasonable as a backup on a car that sits.
