Battery Tester vs Load Tester: Which Tells You More

A conductance tester reads a battery in seconds without discharging it; a load tester actually makes it work. They fail different batteries, and that matters.

Both claim to tell you whether the battery is any good. They go about it in opposite ways, and the difference is not academic — they can disagree about the same battery.

The short answer

A conductance tester reads the battery electronically in a few seconds, without discharging it, and gives you a number to compare against the rating on the label. A load tester applies a large draw and watches the voltage sag, which is the more direct evidence because it makes the battery do the actual job. For most owners the conductance tester is the one to own; the load tester is the one that settles an argument.

Why they can disagree

A conductance test infers remaining capacity from how easily current passes through the plates. It is quick, repeatable and does the battery no harm, which is why it has largely taken over in workshops. What it is doing, though, is predicting performance from a proxy measurement.

A load test does not predict. It draws something in the region of half the battery's cold-cranking rating and watches what the voltage does. A battery that holds up is demonstrably capable of holding up; one that collapses has demonstrated the failure rather than been estimated into it.

Where this matters is the battery that tests acceptably on conductance and still will not crank on a cold morning. That is exactly the case a load test catches and a quick electronic check can miss.

Charge it first, in both cases

Neither tool tells you anything useful about a flat battery. Both need it reasonably charged, or what they measure is the state of discharge rather than the state of health — and a load test on a deeply flat battery is hard on a battery that is already struggling.

The correct order is charge fully, let it rest for a few hours so the surface charge dissipates, then test. Doing it the other way around produces a fail that means nothing.

Who should pick which

If you own one car and want to know before winter whether the battery will see the season out, the conductance tester is enough and you will actually use it — what to look at and when covers the routine. Buy the load tester if you deal with several vehicles, or if you have already had a battery pass a quick test and fail you anyway.

And if the real question is why a healthy battery keeps going flat, neither of these answers it — that is a parasitic drain, and it needs a meter.

Questions people actually ask

What is the actual difference in how they measure?
A conductance tester sends a small AC signal through the battery and reads how easily it passes, which correlates with the healthy plate area remaining. A load tester does the blunt version — it draws a large current for several seconds and watches how far the voltage falls. One infers health, the other demonstrates it.
Which one is more accurate?
Neither straightforwardly. A load test is the more direct evidence, because it makes the battery do the thing it is actually needed for. A conductance test is more repeatable and much less demanding to perform, and is what most workshops now use. The honest answer is that they can disagree, and a battery that fails either is worth taking seriously.
Why does a load tester get hot?
Because it works by converting the battery's output into heat through a heavy resistive element, which is where the term carbon pile comes from. That is also why the instructions specify a test of a few seconds with a cooling interval — it is a genuine duty-cycle limit, not caution for its own sake.
Does either test work on a flat battery?
Not meaningfully. Both need the battery reasonably charged first, or they measure the discharge rather than the health, and a load test on a deeply flat battery is hard on it. Charge it fully, let it rest, then test — testing first and charging afterwards is the wrong order.
Can I skip both and just use a multimeter?
For state of charge, yes, entirely. For health, no — voltage tells you what is in the battery, not what it can still deliver, and a sulfated battery holding a fraction of its rated capacity can show a perfectly respectable resting voltage right up until it fails to crank.
