1. The connections, which cost nothing to check

Start here every time. A corroded or loose terminal drops voltage under load and imitates a flat battery precisely.

Look for white or blue powder, a terminal that moves when you twist it by hand, and an earth strap that looks tired where it meets the body.

Dielectric grease

Goes on after the connection is clean and tight, to keep moisture out — not between the mating surfaces, which is the common mistake. It is an insulator, not a conductor.

2. The battery itself, tested properly

A resting voltage reading tells you state of charge, not capacity. A tired battery can look almost normal at rest and collapse the instant the starter turns.

3. Something draining it while parked

If the battery is good and the connections are clean but it is flat every few days, something is awake that should be asleep.

4. The charging system

Measure at the terminals with the engine off, then running. A working charging system raises the voltage noticeably; one that is not leaves it where it was.

When the fault is the wiring rather than the battery

Intermittent faults, accessories that drop out over bumps, and corrosion away from the battery are a different family of problem.
