A puncture has three common answers and they are not ranked versions of each other. Each fails somewhere different, and the right one depends on the damage, the car and whether you are willing to work at the roadside at all.

The short version

  • Object in the tread, and you will get your hands dirty — plug kit plus an inflator. It is the only one of the three that actually repairs anything.
  • You want the car moving with minimum involvement — sealant, accepting that you have made the eventual proper repair harder and possibly impossible.

Where each one genuinely wins

Plug kit

It is the only option that addresses the actual hole. For a nail or screw in the crown of a tubeless tire — the most common puncture by a wide margin — a plug seals it well enough to drive to a shop, and it costs almost nothing to carry.

The catch is that it is a job. You have to find the object, ream the hole, insert the plug and then reinflate, which means an inflator is not optional. The limits of what is repairable are covered in tire plug kits worth keeping.

Sealant

Its virtue is that it demands nothing of you. Connect, inflate, drive slowly. For someone who will not kneel at a roadside — a legitimate position — it is the difference between moving and waiting.

The costs are real though. It coats the inside of the tire, which obscures the internal inspection a proper repair depends on, and some fitters decline sealant-filled tires outright. On a car with direct pressure sensors, compatibility is a genuine question rather than a formality.

Spare wheel

The only one that restores the car rather than patching it — and increasingly the one you do not have, because many cars now ship with a mobility kit instead to save weight.

A full-size matching spare is unambiguously the best outcome and costs the most space. A space-saver is a compromise with published speed and distance limits that exist because it changes how the car handles and brakes.

The combination most people should actually carry

Plug kit plus inflator, regardless of what else is in the boot.

If the car has a spare, the kit means a tread puncture does not require jacking the car on a verge. If the car has no spare, the kit converts the most common failure from "call someone" into a repair. Either way it is small, cheap and it addresses the case that occurs most.

Go to a tire shop, not onward with the journey. Have the tire demounted and inspected, and accept that the answer may be replacement — particularly if it lost pressure while driving rather than while parked.

Questions people actually ask

Which one should I carry if I can only carry one?
A plug kit and a means of inflation, if the car has no spare and you are willing to use them. That combination repairs the most common failure — an object in the tread — rather than postponing it. If you would not attempt a roadside repair, the honest answer is roadside assistance and nothing in the boot.
Does sealant wreck the tire pressure sensor?
It can, and compatibility varies by product. Sensors sit inside the wheel and sealant coats whatever it reaches. Products marketed as sensor-safe exist; generic ones frequently are not. If your car has direct pressure monitoring, check the bottle before it is the only option you have at the roadside.
Why do fitters refuse a tire that has had sealant in it?
Partly the mess — the inside has to be cleaned before any patch will bond — and partly liability, because sealant obscures the internal inspection that decides whether a tire is repairable at all. Some will clean and repair, some will not. It is a policy question rather than a physics one.
How far can I drive on a space-saver?
Follow the sticker on the wheel rather than a general figure — limits are set per vehicle and typically restrict both speed and distance substantially. They are designed to reach a tire shop, not to finish a journey, and they change the car's handling and braking noticeably.
My car came with a sealant kit and no spare. Should I add a plug kit?
It is a cheap upgrade and it covers the case the factory kit handles worst. A tire mobility kit is sealant plus a compressor; adding plugs means a nail in the tread becomes a repair rather than a bottle of sealant and a compromised tire. You already have the inflator, which is the expensive half.
Is a plug ever a permanent repair?
Not by industry standard. The permanent repair is a patch-plug fitted from inside after the tire is removed from the rim, which also allows the internal inspection an external plug skips. Treat a plug as what gets you to the shop.
